Trees & Shrubs – Their Effects

Branches and twigs from the garden – which woody plants are beneficial and which you should avoid.

🌿 General Rule: Only offer branches from woody plants that you can reliably identify. If in doubt, rather omit them!

✅ Apple

Branches very popular, nibble-friendly, well-tolerated

✅ Pear

Similar to apple – readily accepted

✅ Willow

Classic! Contains salicylic acid – slightly pain-relieving

✅ Hazel

Branches and leaves popular, well-tolerated

✅ Birch

Branches and bark popular – diuretic

✅ Lime

Branches, leaves, and flowers – all usable

⚠️ Oak

Bark and leaves – small amounts okay, not too much (tannins)

⚠️ Nut

Leaves okay in small amounts – avoid fruits

❌ Yew

Highly poisonous! All parts – absolutely forbidden!

❌ Boxwood

Poisonous – avoid all parts

❌ Thuja / Arborvitae

Poisonous – keep at a distance

❌ Cherry Laurel

Poisonous hydrocyanic acid in the leaves

⚠️ Important: Do not offer treated branches! Pesticides can be fatal to rabbits. Only from untreated gardens.
