Summer for your darlings

The summer months are a wonderful time of the year, but also a challenge for rabbit owners.

As temperatures rise, it's important that we do everything in our power to keep our little furry friends cool and protected from the heat.

To ensure our rabbits stay healthy and happy, we should give them access to cool water on hot days.

One option is to keep their enclosures in the shade or install a sunshade to ensure they are protected from direct sunlight.

We can also put wet towels or even great cooling agents in their enclosure to help them cool down.

  • Overall, it is important that we are aware of how sensitive rabbits are to heat and how important it is to protect them from overheating.

By providing them with access to water, shade and cooling items at all times, we ensure that our little friends stay happy and healthy even on hot days.

We have put together everything you need to know so that you can prepare for the hot days ❤️

Tips against the heat/ outside keeping

If it is really hot, you should also limit your rabbits' activities and give them some rest.

One of many options is to move the enclosure to a shady spot .

It is also important that you always have fresh drinking water available and change the water regularly so that it does not get too warm.

  • Our popular cooling oases are ideal for your little darlings to cool down.
  • You can also cover areas with damp/wet towels - please never place them over the rabbit, as this can lead to a build-up of heat!
  • Fresh food should also be offered in good quantities so that your pet can drink plenty of fluids.

To ensure that your fresh food stays fresh for longer, even at higher temperatures, we recommend our great cooling plate , which you can also equip with ice packs at any time.
  • Our sandboxes are also ideal as a cool place to retreat to in the summer; you can fill them with moistened sand or soil .
  • Proper fur care for rabbits is essential, especially in hot temperatures. You can give rabbits with longer fur a summer haircut . To do this, simply shorten the fur with scissors. But make sure that you don't cut off too much , as the fur also serves as protection against the sun, among other things.

You should also comb your rabbits regularly .

It is especially important to thin out the rabbits' thick fur in hot weather. Just like us humans, rabbits lose a few hairs every day, which get caught in their coat and act as additional insulation. Therefore, take a small comb and brush your rabbits every day. This will remove the hair that has gotten stuck.
  • It is also important here that you ensure that there are always enough shady spots and, if necessary, design the enclosure so that there is always enough shade.
  • You can also use bushes such as bamboo as a natural shade.
  • In extreme heat, especially when sufficient natural shade cannot be provided, rabbits should be moved to a cool place during the day on extremely hot days, such as the house or garage.

It is also very important that you check your rabbits and guinea pigs daily , especially those with a tendency to diarrhea, overweight or weakened, sick or elderly animals, in order to detect possible contamination or fly maggot infestation in good time.

If you notice small white eggs in the fur that look like tiny grains of rice - as we always say - you should seek emergency veterinary care immediately !

Dirt on the rear end should be removed immediately, especially in rabbits with diarrhea or cystitis. In these cases, it is advisable to take the animals inside to clean them better and protect them from flies. Animals at risk can also be protected with spot-on products such as Capstar. Just talk to your vet about this.

Tips against the heat/ indoors

Here, too, it is important that you give your pets some rest, because such extreme heat puts a lot of strain on the animals, even when kept indoors.

Of course, fresh drinking water should always be available here, as well as cool places to lie down .

  • Our cooling oasis can not only be integrated outdoors, but also of course indoors.

Here you can give your loved ones a great cooling down at any time by changing the ice packs at any time.
  • Fresh food should also be offered in good quantities so that your pet can drink plenty of fluids.

To ensure that your fresh food stays fresh for longer, even at higher temperatures, we recommend our great cooling plate , which you can also equip with ice packs at any time.
  • Our sandboxes are ideal as a cool place to retreat to in the summer; you can fill them with moistened sand or soil .

But even when keeping animals indoors, many great tips and tricks from keeping animals outdoors can be implemented.

Veterinarian visits

When transporting rabbits and guinea pigs, it is recommended to avoid this if possible.

However, if transport is unavoidable, you should make sure that you bring your pet to its destination in the evening, at night or in the early morning hours .

It is best to use a car that has air conditioning , but please make sure that you are not sitting in a draft .

If there is no air conditioning, you can place ice packs under the transport box and on the side of the transport box to ensure a more comfortable temperature.

A damp cloth or a previously cooled stone slab can also serve as a surface for cooling.
